Anger and sports

Sports is absolutely one of the common things that most people definitely enjoy doing. With family and friends, it is basically one of the funnest things to do.  It is also fun if you do it competitively.Whether it is professional or amateur it is actually something that people deeply enjoy much.  But sometimes that competitiveness can go way overboard. Sometimes that spirit of competitiveness can actually lead to anger. In this article we are going to examine anger within sports and how it hurts or helps the people involved.

Now there are some sports that are seemingly violent like football or boxing. But is there really a place for anger within those sports.  Some people say there is, but what I have found from my San Diego sports psychology practice is that anger is really a detriment. When a person gets angry even in a seemingly violent sports, you really can't think right or brilliantly. And contrary to the popular opinion that most sports are actually mental game and not just really physical.

So there is no place for anger in sports and that is my contention. Sometimes our competitive nature makes us angry when we lose. But if we want to succeed in sports or life, we cannot get angry when things don't go well. That is really a recipe for failure. And for those parents who actually do put their children in sports and want them to succeed, I always give them advice. The advice I give them as a family counselor San Diego is to teach them how to control their anger.

But sometimes to motivate themselves, some people actually do use anger. Sometimes it works for a time.  But in reality sometimes that anger boils over into personal life as they begin to lose the ability to control it.  That is when I end up seeing a lot of patients in my anger management counseling services.

So in reality we all surely get mad at many times in our lives.  But to truly be successful in anything like sports, we have to know how to control it.
