How To Recognize Identity Theft Scams

A major crime being committed these days is identity theft. The rate at which people are becoming victims continues to grow. These scams are different every day, as thieves are learning other ways to trick people out of their money. With a few helpful tips, at least people stand a better chance of recognizing a scam when they see one.

Some identity theft scams are more prevalent than others. One takes place over the phone, and people are very surprised at this because you wouldn’t think that a criminal would just call you up on the phone so blatantly and bold like that. This scam involves the thief posing as a credit card company representative or bill collector. They will try to swindle their way into getting enough personal information to use in order to steal the person’s identity for their own financial gain. Just be very careful with who you are giving personal information out to on the phone.

Another way identity theft can occur is through e-mail, also referred to as identity theft phishing. An individual will send you an e-mail claiming to represent a legitimate company and need personal information from you. There are again a lot of people who fall for this scam. These criminals can be very deceptive, but people should know that real companies would never contact you asking for that type of information, especially through e-mail. Never write back with personal information no matter who they may say that they are.

There are many other identity theft scams as well to be aware of in addition to the ones mentioned above. The most important thing is that people take preventative measures so that they can hopefully avoid becoming a victim of identity theft. This means shredding documents and not leaving an ATM receipt behind once you leave. Driver's license cards, old bank cards, credit card and bank statements, and anything else with important information should all be shredded or torn up. You can also obtain identity theft coverage for protection.

Monitoring your credit report is always critical. Request a credit report at least once a year. Educate and be aware of how these criminals work. Contact the authorities immediately when you realize that there is a discrepancy in your bank or credit card statement. Taking action right away is highly encouraged so no further damage is done.
