Picking a lawyer to represent you may be one of the most important decisions you make. Just like your doctor you should feel comfortable with them. After all you are going to trust them with private information, and in some cases your financial well being or your freedom.

 

Here are a few tips to make sure you end up with the best lawyer for your needs:

 

Whether you're choosing a lawyer to represent you in a family law matter, a personal injury case, a bankruptcy or any kind of legal matter, the smartest thing you can do is to be picky: always interview at least three potential lawyers. Interview at least three lawyers and narrow your search by eliminating those attorneys about whom you get a bad feeling.

Check to make sure that your lawyer graduated from an accredited law school. You can find a list of approved law colleges on the American Bars' website. Also ensure that your potential lawyer hasn’t had any disciplinary action taken against them by the Bar. If they have don’t hire them.

You should also check through court indexes to confirm whether or not your potential lawyer has ever been or is being sued by one of their clients.  This can usually be done online, or by visiting the court house and asking the clerk for assistance.

Once you have sat down and discussed your case with a lawyer you need to ask a few basic questions of your own such as; how long they have been practicing, how long the practice has been running, their current percentage of favourable rulings and will they be handling your case personally or will it just be passed to a less experienced person within the practice.

And finally whichever lawyer you decide to use in the end don’t forget that if you feel at any point they treat you unfairly, you can report them to the Bar.
