What does law mean?

We are affected by the law in our everyday lives in England and Wales, yet many people don't know much about the legal system that operates here. BMost peoples awareness comes from the newspapers with sensational headlines like 'Life for murderer', 'Burglar disturbed in house' or 'Young thug released'. This type of headline appears so frequently that it is not surprising that, when law is mentioned, many people only think of the criminal law and the courts that deal with this type of case. The situation in this country is that the law covers a huge number of situation and a variety of courts exist in England and Wales that deal with the many different types of cases.

Company Law

Company law is very important in the business world: It regulates how a company should be formed, sets out formal rules for running companies, and deals with the rights and duties of shareholders and directors. Employment law covers the whole subject of employment, from the original crafting of the contract of employment to unpleasantries such as unfair dismissals and redundancies. As well as areas of private law, law exist that relate to land, copyright infringement and patents, marine law and lots of other subject, so it is evident that civil law covers many situations in life.

Employment

Like any business, staff are needed to keep the business alive. So what happens when the mood turns sour, and their is a real risk of termination of contracts? It is a place in law where for a long time alternative dispute resolution has been used in the form of ACAS (Advisory Conciliation and Arbritration Service). When any claim is filed at an employment tribunal, a copy of that claim is sent to ACAS who will then contact the two parties involved and offer to attempt to resolve the dispute without the need for the matter to go to a tribunal. Specially trained conciliation officers work for ACAS, which demands a high level of experience in dealing with the issues of employment.
